GORDON + CYNTHIA
"How'd you two meet?" It's the question that always comes up. Everyone has their own unique story, so here's ours…
I was living with my roommate, Erika, at the time and she asked if I wanted to go with her to a "going away" party for Gordon. Gordon, being Canadian, was going back since he was just here on a visa and had to go back every so often. It sounded like a fun time, so why not!?
I saw Gordon a couple of times before that for friend's birthdays or other events, but didn't really know him. I just thought he was cute and funny.
We sat at a big table at HMF at the Breakers with a bunch of our mutual friends and all hung out and had a good time. The usual jokes were made about Gordon being Canadian. All the girls were asking who was going to marry Gordon so he wouldn't have to leave. I jokingly chimed in, saying “I would!" without having any idea that one day I was actually going to marry this guy I barely knew!
We moved on to another location, Dirty Martini. The drinks kept flowing and I decided to talk to Gordon and tell him how adorable I thought he was. We talked a while longer and his ride said she wanted to leave. We said our goodbyes and went home. Later, I saw a facebook message from Gordon. We chatted back and forth and he told me he would be back in a couple of months.
Months went by and I didn’t think too much of it. There was a message here and there but just typical conversation. He told me he would be back for New Years’ but I already had other plans. We planned to meet up after that. Every time I was around him, I found it harder and harder to stay away from him. I thought to myself, “This is silly”, he’s just going to have to go back to Canada again at some point!” But I couldn’t stay away…
We officially started dating and then the time came where he had to go back to Canada. What was supposed to be a week turned into a couple of months. We talked on the phone the whole time he was away, but it was very difficult. I decided to plan a quick trip and fly up there to see him. At time point, we finally shared our “I love You’s” and coming back home was even harder. He finally returned which seemed like forever!
We were together for about a year when what I thought was a nice date out to the Breakers turned into a wedding proposal!
